Best creatine for women on GLP-1 medications: a buyer's checklist

Ball-and-stick model of the creatine molecule, the one ingredient to look for on a label

Short version: The best creatine for women on GLP-1 treatment is plain creatine monohydrate, taken at 3 to 5 g a day, from a brand that uses outside lab testing. No trial has tested creatine in people on a GLP-1 yet, so pick the simple, well-studied option and tell your prescriber.

  • Form: monohydrate. No paper shows a fancier form beats it.
  • Proof: look for an NSF Certified for Sport seal or a lab report.
  • Check: the Supplement Facts panel lists grams of creatine per serving.

You started a GLP-1. Now every wellness feed says to add creatine. So what is the best creatine for women on GLP-1 medicines?

The shelf is a mess. Powders, capsules, gummies, "advanced" blends. Some cost three times more than others.

Here is a short checklist. It is built for women who already take a GLP-1 and want one clean pick, not a research project.

What is the best creatine for women on GLP-1?

Creatine monohydrate is the safe default. There is no "GLP-1 creatine." No product has been tested in people on these drugs.

That gap is real. A 2026 paper says plainly that no randomized clinical trial has directly tested creatine during GLP-1 treatment. It calls the idea hypothesis-generating. See Ostojic and Galyean (Clin Nutr, 2026). The lead author discloses ties to creatine companies.

So you are not looking for a special formula. You are looking for the most studied form, in a dose the studies used, that is what the label says it is.

Our guide to creatine on a GLP-1 covers the muscle evidence. This page is about the buying part.

Check What to look for Why it matters
Form Creatine monohydrate Most studied. No paper shows other forms store more creatine in muscle.
Dose 3 to 5 g a day The range experts call well tolerated.
Testing NSF Certified for Sport or a lab report The FDA does not test supplements before sale.
Label Grams of creatine per serving Gummies and blends can hide the real amount.
Your care team Prescriber says OK Kidney labs and fluids matter more on a GLP-1.

Which form of creatine should you buy?

Monohydrate. It is the plain one.

Brands sell creatine HCl, buffered creatine, ethyl ester, and nitrate. They cost more. The experts who wrote the 2021 ISSN review looked for proof. They found no peer-reviewed paper showing that equal amounts of those forms raise muscle creatine more than monohydrate. See Antonio et al. (JISSN, 2021).

Higher price is not a better product. It is a price.

How much creatine should you take?

The studied range is 3 to 5 g a day, or about 0.1 g per kg of body weight. The same 2021 review calls that range relatively well tolerated.

For a 70 kg (154 lb) woman, 0.1 g per kg is 7 g. Most guides round down to the 3 to 5 g range, so ask your prescriber which end fits you.

Skip the "loading" week. It is not part of the 3 to 5 g range, and a big new variable is the last thing your stomach needs on a GLP-1.

Take the same small amount each day, and ask your prescriber about timing.

Does third-party testing matter for creatine?

Yes. It is the closest thing to a safety net you get.

The FDA does not approve dietary supplements before they are sold. It also says it does not test supplements before sale. See the FDA supplement questions and answers. The company is responsible for what is in the tub.

An outside lab seal fills that gap. The NSF Certified for Sport program says it checks for unsafe levels of contaminants, banned substances, and masking agents. It also checks that what is on the label matches what is in the product.

No seal? Look for a recent lab report from the brand, with a batch number you can match to your tub.

Can you read the label of a creatine gummy?

Read it the same way you read a powder. Find the Supplement Facts panel.

FDA rules say the panel must list each dietary ingredient and the amount per serving, unless it sits inside a proprietary blend. So you want a line that says creatine, with grams, not milligrams hidden in a blend.

Then do the math. If one gummy has a fraction of a gram, you would need many to reach 3 to 5 g. Our guide on whether creatine gummies work walks through that sum.

Is creatine safe for your kidneys on a GLP-1?

For healthy adults, studies say yes. But a GLP-1 changes the picture a little, so your doctor should know.

A 2026 meta-analysis of 19 randomized trials found creatine raised serum creatinine, a kidney lab number, by 0.13 mg/dL. It found no difference in urea or in eGFR, the main kidney filtering score. See Tsiaras et al. (J Ren Nutr, 2026). The authors also call for longer trials.

That matters because your doctor may order kidney labs. The Wegovy label says to monitor kidney function in patients with severe stomach side effects. See the Wegovy prescribing information.

So tell your prescriber you take creatine. A slightly higher creatinine can then be read the right way.

It is not you. It is a lab quirk worth explaining before the test, not after.

What should you pair with creatine on a GLP-1?

Lifting and food. Creatine is the small piece.

A 2025 joint advisory from four nutrition and obesity groups lists protecting muscle and bone through resistance training and a good diet as a core job during GLP-1 use. It also says managing stomach side effects is critical. See Mozaffarian et al. (Am J Clin Nutr, 2025).

Creatine is not named as a fix there. It is an extra, and the research on that is still early.

If you are short on appetite, a perfect powder will not matter much. Start with protein and water. Our post on creatine side effects in women also covers bloating and fluids.

Who should skip creatine or ask first?

  • Anyone with kidney disease. Ask before you buy.
  • Anyone with ongoing vomiting or diarrhea. Fluids come first.
  • Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. Ask your clinician.
  • Anyone on several medicines. Have a pharmacist check the full list.

The FDA advises talking to a doctor, pharmacist, or other health professional before you use any dietary supplement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best creatine for women on a GLP-1?

Plain creatine monohydrate at 3 to 5 g a day, from a brand with outside lab testing. No creatine has been tested in people on a GLP-1, so check with your prescriber first.

Are creatine gummies good for women on a GLP-1?

Only if the label lists grams of creatine per serving and you can reach 3 to 5 g without a long list of gummies. Some do not. Seya's creatine gummy is coming January 2027 and is not on sale yet.

Does the form of creatine matter?

Monohydrate is the most studied form. A 2021 review found no peer-reviewed paper showing that other forms raise muscle creatine more.

How do you know a creatine is third-party tested?

Look for a seal such as NSF Certified for Sport, or a recent lab report that matches your batch number. The FDA does not test supplements before they are sold.

Can creatine affect kidney labs on a GLP-1?

It can raise serum creatinine by about 0.13 mg/dL, per a 2026 meta-analysis, without changing eGFR. Tell your prescriber you take it so labs are read the right way.

Does creatine replace a GLP-1 or help it work?

No. Creatine does not replace any medicine and does not change how a GLP-1 works.
