Creatine weight gain timeline: how much you gain, and does it last?

A bathroom scale on the floor, where creatine weight gain first shows up as a pound or two of water

Short version: Most creatine weight gain is water, and most of it shows up in the first week. With a high-dose "loading" week, the ISSN says people hold about 0.5 to 1 liter of extra fluid. That is roughly 1 to 2 pounds. At a plain 3 to 5 g a day, it comes on slower and is often smaller.

  • Week 1: the fast part. Water moves into your muscles.
  • Weeks 2 to 12: the scale steadies. Any further gain is mostly lean tissue, and only if you lift.
  • After you stop: muscle creatine drifts back to normal in about 4 weeks, and the water goes with it.

Last updated October 2026.

You start creatine. Three days later the scale is up 2 pounds.

That number is real. But it is not fat, and it does not keep climbing.

Here is how much weight creatine adds, week by week, how much of it is muscle, and what happens when you stop.

How much weight do you gain with creatine?

For most people, a few pounds at most. The size depends on your dose and on whether you train.

The 2017 position stand from the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) says weight gain is the only side effect of creatine that studies report again and again. It says a loading week holds about 0.5 to 1.0 liter of extra fluid, and that this roughly matches the weight people gain. See Kreider et al. (JISSN, 2017).

A liter of water weighs 1 kg, or about 2.2 pounds. So a typical early gain is about 1 to 2 pounds.

In one trial of 16 men and 16 women, a loading week raised body weight and total body water. The water went into the body as a whole. It did not pool under the skin or shift where fluid sits. See Powers et al. (J Athl Train, 2003).

Creatine weight gain timeline, week by week

This is what the studies show, in order. Your own numbers will vary.

When What happens What it is
Days 1 to 7, loading Fastest gain on the scale Mostly water inside muscle
Weeks 1 to 4, no loading Slower, steady rise Water, as muscle slowly fills
Weeks 4 to 12 Scale levels off Lean tissue, if you strength train
Months 3 and on No new jump from creatine Trials up to 2 years show no fat gain
About 4 weeks after stopping Water weight fades Muscle creatine back to baseline

The speed comes from how fast your muscles fill. In a study of 31 men, 20 g a day for 6 days raised muscle creatine by about 20%. Taking 3 g a day reached the same level, but it took 28 days. See Hultman et al. (J Appl Physiol, 1996).

Does a higher creatine dose cause more weight gain?

A higher dose causes faster weight gain. It does not raise the ceiling much.

Your muscles can only hold so much creatine. Once they are full, extra creatine leaves in your urine. A big loading dose gets you to "full" in about a week. A small daily dose gets you there in 3 to 4 weeks.

That is why the scale jump feels so sudden with loading, and is easy to miss on 3 to 5 g a day. A 2021 expert review says the water retention mostly happens "in the early stages (first several days)." It found that most training studies of 5 to 10 weeks saw no rise in total body water. See Antonio et al. (JISSN, 2021).

If the scale bothers you, skip loading. Our guide to when to take creatine covers daily dosing and timing.

How much creatine weight gain is muscle?

Some of it can be, but only with training, and less for women than for men.

A 2022 review pooled 35 trials with 1,192 people. Here is what it found for lean mass. See Delpino et al. (Nutrition, 2022).

  • All trials: about 0.68 kg more lean mass than placebo.
  • With strength training: about 1.10 kg more.
  • With no exercise: about 0.03 kg, which is close to zero.
  • Men: about 1.46 kg more.
  • Women: about 0.29 kg more, a change too small to rule out chance.

"Lean mass" on these scans counts water in muscle, too. So part of that number is still fluid. Creatine does not build muscle on its own. It helps you do a bit more work in the gym, and the work builds the muscle.

How much weight do women gain on creatine?

Usually less than men. Two trials that tested both sexes point the same way.

In a trial of 15 men and 15 women, a 5-day loading dose raised body weight and fat-free mass. Body fat did not change. The weight change was bigger in men. See Mihic et al. (Med Sci Sports Exerc, 2000).

A 10-week trial in 19 women who were new to lifting gives a longer view. Women on creatine gained 60% more fat-free mass than women on placebo. Their strength gains in the trained muscles were 20% to 25% bigger, too. See Vandenberghe et al. (J Appl Physiol, 1997).

The 2021 review notes that women may start with fuller creatine stores in muscle, perhaps because they tend to have less muscle overall. That may be one reason the jump is smaller. For the full list of what is and is not a real side effect, see creatine side effects in women.

Is creatine weight gain permanent?

The water part is not. The muscle you build by training can stay, as with any muscle.

The Hultman study tracked men after they stopped. Thirty days later, muscle creatine was back to where it started. In the women's trial above, muscle stores returned to normal within 4 weeks of stopping.

Not everyone drops that fast. In a case study of one man, muscle stores were still above baseline after a 30-day break, and he kept 2.0 kg of his gain. See Rawson et al. (J Strength Cond Res, 2004). One person is not a rule. But it is a fair warning that the water may take more than a month to leave.

Does creatine make you gain fat?

No trial has shown it. The 2021 review looked at controlled trials lasting from 1 week to 2 years. None found that creatine raises body fat.

So if the scale goes up a pound or two, your body is holding water inside muscle cells. That is the same place creatine is meant to go.

One thing to know about that review: several authors disclose ties to a company that makes creatine, which the paper lists in full.

Is long-term creatine use safe for healthy adults?

The research says yes at normal doses. The ISSN position stand says studies giving creatine for up to 5 years found no harm in healthy people.

If you have kidney disease, are pregnant, or take medicine that affects your kidneys, talk to your doctor first. Creatine can also raise creatinine, a kidney lab number, without kidney damage. Tell your doctor you take it before blood work.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight is gained with creatine?

Usually about 1 to 2 pounds in the first week of a loading dose. The ISSN says loading holds about 0.5 to 1 liter of extra fluid, which roughly matches the gain.

How much weight do women gain on creatine?

Usually less than men. In a trial of 15 men and 15 women, the weight change after loading was bigger in men, and body fat did not change in either group.

Is creatine weight gain permanent?

The water is not. Muscle creatine returned to normal about 30 days after stopping in men, and within 4 weeks in women. Muscle you build by training can stay.

Does a higher creatine dose cause more weight gain?

It causes faster gain, not much more. 20 g a day fills muscle in about a week. 3 g a day reached the same level in 28 days.

How much of creatine weight gain is muscle?

Some, if you strength train. A 2022 review of 35 trials found about 1.10 kg more lean mass with training, and about 0.03 kg with no exercise.

How long does creatine weight gain last?

The fast water gain happens in the first week, then levels off. It fades about 4 weeks after you stop, though some people hold it longer.

Does quitting creatine make you lose the weight?

You lose the water part over about a month. You keep muscle you built, as long as you keep training.

Is long-term creatine monohydrate use safe for healthy adults?

Studies of up to 5 years found no harm in healthy people at normal doses, per the ISSN. Check with your doctor if you have kidney disease or are pregnant.
