Better than Metamucil? The fiber supplements worth switching to
Short version: Is anything better than Metamucil? For regularity, not by much. Metamucil is psyllium, and psyllium has the best evidence of any fiber supplement. In a 2022 review of 16 trials, 66% of people on fiber improved vs 41% on placebo, and psyllium led. What can be better is the version you buy. Same fiber, less sugar, lower price, or a format you will actually keep taking.
- Store-brand psyllium lists the same 3.4 g of psyllium husk per dose as Metamucil powder.
- Metamucil Fiber Gummies are not psyllium. They use inulin and Fibersol, 5 g per 3 gummies.
- Benefiber is wheat dextrin. Citrucel is methylcellulose. Lemme Fiber Gummies are FOS. Each is a different fiber, with less proof for regularity.

Short answer first. If your goal is regularity, the fiber inside Metamucil is hard to beat. It is psyllium husk, and psyllium has more trial data than any other fiber supplement.
The proof is real. A 2022 meta-analysis in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition pooled 16 trials and 1,251 adults with chronic constipation. On fiber, 311 of 473 people responded. On control, 134 of 329 did. Psyllium was one of only 2 fibers with a clear effect.
So "better than Metamucil" usually means a better fit. Less sugar. A lower price. Less gas. A format you don't dread. Those are fair reasons to switch, and you can make the switch without giving up the fiber that works.
Is there something better than Metamucil?
For stool form and regularity, nothing on the shelf has stronger evidence than psyllium. That is the fiber in Metamucil powder.
Two major US gut-doctor groups looked at this. The 2023 constipation guideline from the American Gastroenterological Association and the American College of Gastroenterology gave fiber a conditional thumbs-up, based on low-certainty evidence. Then it named a winner:
"Among the evaluated fiber supplements, only psyllium appears to be effective (with very limited and uncertain data on bran and inulin)." AGA-ACG Clinical Practice Guideline, 2023
Note the wording. The win belongs to psyllium, not to one brand. Any product that lists psyllium husk is using the same tested fiber.
What is better than Metamucil for your goal?
It depends on what bugs you about it. Pick the problem, then pick the fix.
- Too much sugar. Switch to a sugar-free psyllium. Same fiber, sweetened with aspartame instead of sucrose.
- Too pricey. Try store-brand psyllium. The active ingredient is the same.
- Too gritty. Try a finer psyllium powder or capsules, or a gummy for daily habit.
- Too much gas. Drop the dose and build up over 2 to 4 weeks. Drink more water.
- High LDL is your worry. Stay with psyllium. Ask your doctor first.
If Metamucil left you bloated, or you quit because the glass felt like wet sand, that was never a willpower problem. Fiber makes gas while your gut adjusts. The 2022 review found more flatulence in the fiber groups than in control. That is a dose and format issue. You can fix those.
Metamucil vs off brand: is generic psyllium the same?
On the active ingredient, yes. Store-brand psyllium lists the same amount of the same fiber.
Metamucil powder lists psyllium husk, about 3.4 g per dose, on its drug label filed with the National Library of Medicine. Target's up&up Fiber Therapy lists psyllium husk, about 3.4 g per teaspoon, and says to compare it to the active ingredient in Metamucil, per its DailyMed label.
What can differ is the rest of the jar. Sweetener, flavor, color, grind, and price. Read the inactive ingredients line, not the front of the tub.

Why does psyllium win on the evidence?
Because it makes a gel. Most other fibers in the table don't.
Psyllium holds water as it moves through your gut. That keeps stool soft and bulky. A 2017 review in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says fibers that don't gel, like wheat dextrin and inulin, do not give a laxative effect. It also says wheat dextrin can be constipating for some people.
Dose matters too. The 2022 review saw the clearest results above 10 g of fiber a day, taken for at least 4 weeks. One packet of Metamucil gives you 3 g. Most people in those trials took several doses a day.
Does psyllium help cholesterol, and do the others?
Psyllium has real data on LDL cholesterol. The other fibers in this table don't carry the same claim.
A 2018 meta-analysis in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition pooled 28 trials and 1,924 people. About 10.2 g of psyllium a day lowered LDL by 0.33 mmol/L, roughly 13 mg/dL.
The FDA lets foods with psyllium carry a heart-health claim. Under 21 CFR 101.81, the level linked to lower heart risk is 7 g or more a day of soluble fiber from psyllium husk, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Metamucil says 1 serving has 2.4 g of that soluble fiber, per its product page footnote. So you would need about 3 servings a day.
If cholesterol is your reason, stay with psyllium and loop in your doctor. A gummy is not the tool for that job.
Lemme vs Metamucil: what is different?
They are different fibers, in different formats, built for different jobs.
Lemme Fiber Gummies give you 4 g of FOS per 2 gummies, with no added sugar, plus 2 probiotic strains and vitamin D3, per Lemme's own label. FOS is a prebiotic. It feeds gut bacteria.
Metamucil powder is psyllium, the gel-forming fiber with the most constipation data. If regularity is the only goal, the evidence leans toward psyllium. If you want a chewable daily habit and a prebiotic, a gummy like Lemme's is a different kind of product. Neither is a scam. They just aren't the same thing.
Are fiber gummies better than Metamucil powder?
For evidence, no. For sticking with it, sometimes yes.
Gummies give you fewer grams per serving, and most use fibers with less trial data. Here is a detail most people miss. Metamucil Fiber Gummies list inulin and Fibersol, not psyllium, per their NIH label entry. If you swapped the orange drink for the gummies, you swapped fibers too.
The upside is real, though. A gummy needs no glass and no stirring. A fiber you take every day beats a stronger one you quit after a week. Only about 5% of Americans meet fiber recommendations, and the FDA's Daily Value is 28 g, per 21 CFR 101.9. Any steady gram helps close that gap.

How do you switch fiber without the bloat?
Go slow and add water. Your gut needs a few weeks to adjust.
- Start with 1 dose a day. Add a second after a week if you feel fine.
- Mix psyllium with at least 8 ounces of water. The labels warn it can swell and cause choking without enough fluid.
- Take it 2 hours apart from medicines. Metamucil's sugar-free label says bulk fibers like psyllium may affect how well medicines work.
- Give a change about 4 weeks before you judge it.
Switching from psyllium to a non-gelling fiber? Expect a different feel. For how each type acts in your gut, see how fiber supplements work. If perimenopause is part of the picture, read flaxseed vs psyllium for perimenopause constipation.
Where does Seya fit, honestly?
We make a fiber gummy. It is not psyllium, and we won't pretend it competes with psyllium on trial data.
3 vegan gummies give you 4,500 mg of resistant tapioca fiber, 950 mg of prebiotic soluble fiber, and 200 mg of cellulose. That is 5.65 g of fiber. Plus 80 mg of magnesium as magnesium citrate and 100 mg of ginger root. There are 3 g of added sugar per serving, per our product page.
Most studies used more than 10 g a day, so we grade our evidence a C. Our one claim is plain. It supports regularity. If you want the strongest fiber for constipation or LDL, buy psyllium. If you want a daily chew you will actually take, ours is one option. More on the fiber itself in resistant tapioca vs other starches.
This is education, not medical advice. Talk to your clinician before starting fiber if you take daily medication or have a gut condition.

Frequently asked questions
Is there something better than Metamucil?
For regularity, the fiber in Metamucil is hard to top. It is psyllium, and the 2023 AGA-ACG guideline found psyllium the only fiber supplement that appeared effective for chronic constipation. What can be better is the version. A sugar-free or store-brand psyllium gives you the same fiber with less sugar or a lower price. A gummy may suit you better if you won't drink a powder.
What is better than Metamucil for gas and bloating?
Usually a smaller dose, not a different brand. The 2022 review of 16 trials found more flatulence with fiber than with control. Start with 1 dose a day, drink plenty of water, and build up over 2 to 4 weeks. If psyllium still bothers you, a lower-dose gummy is gentler on habit, though its regularity evidence is weaker.
Is generic psyllium the same as Metamucil?
On the active ingredient, yes. Metamucil powder and Target's up&up Fiber Therapy both list about 3.4 g of psyllium husk per dose on their DailyMed labels, and the store brand tells you to compare it to Metamucil. The differences are in sweetener, flavor, texture, and price, so read the inactive ingredients.
Is Benefiber or Metamucil better?
For constipation, the evidence favors Metamucil's psyllium. Benefiber is wheat dextrin, 3 g per 2 teaspoons, and it dissolves clear with 0 g sugar. A 2017 review in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says wheat dextrin does not give a laxative effect. Benefiber is easier to hide in drinks, so it suits people who want added fiber without the texture.
How much sugar is in Metamucil?
It depends on the version. The NIH label database lists 8 g of sugar per 12 g packet of the sugared orange powder, with 3 g of fiber. The sugar-free powder lists 0 g and uses aspartame. Metamucil Fiber Gummies list 2 g of total sugars and 0 g added per 3 gummies.
Are fiber gummies as good as Metamucil powder?
Not on evidence. Gummies usually give 4 to 6 g per serving and use fibers like inulin, FOS, or resistant tapioca, which have less constipation data than psyllium. Gummies win on ease. If a gummy is the only fiber you will take every day, it can still help you close part of the 28 g Daily Value gap.
