Natural remedies and supplements for menopause bloating: what the evidence supports
Short version: Menopause bloating supplements are mostly tested in people with IBS, not in menopause. Even so, gas is common at this stage: in one study, 48% of women past menopause reported gas or too much wind. The best-backed options are soluble fiber, peppermint oil capsules, and a short walk after meals. Probiotics are the big letdown.
- Strongest evidence: soluble fiber (14 trials) and peppermint oil (12 trials), both in IBS.
- Small but useful: an enzyme for beans and a light walk after you eat.
- Skip for bloating: probiotics, per US gut doctors' 2023 advice.
- Get checked: bloating that is new, lasting, or getting worse after 50.

Your jeans fit at breakfast. By 3 p.m., they do not.
If that started around menopause, you are not imagining it. And the supplement aisle has a dozen bottles that promise to fix it.
Here is what the research actually says about each one, ranked from best backed to least.
Is menopause bloating real?
Yes. Gut complaints are common after menopause, even in women who never had them before.
A study of 228 women found that 38% of those past menopause had changes in their bowel habits. Only 14% of younger women did. Gas or too much wind showed up in 48% of the women past menopause. See Triadafilopoulos et al. (Women Health, 1998).
One surprise: in that study, taking estrogen did not change gut symptoms either way.
Why the gut shifts at this stage is its own story. We cover it in menopause and your gut.
Menopause bloating supplements, ranked by evidence
No large trial has tested these remedies in women with menopause bloating alone. Most of the data comes from people with IBS, a common gut condition where bloating is a main symptom. So read this table as "best guess from the closest evidence."
| Remedy | What the research shows | Evidence level |
|---|---|---|
| Soluble fiber (psyllium and similar) | 14 trials, 906 people with IBS: fewer people still had symptoms. Bran did not help. | Moderate |
| Peppermint oil capsules | 12 trials, 835 people with IBS: better overall symptoms and less belly pain. | Moderate |
| Light walk after meals | Small lab study: gas left in the gut fell from 45% to 24% with gentle pedaling. | Low |
| Bean enzyme (alpha-galactosidase) | 8 healthy adults: less gas after a big bean meal. | Low |
| Probiotics | US gut doctors advise against them for bloating. | Not supported |
Each one is explained below, with the study linked.
Does soluble fiber help with bloating?
It can, if it is the right kind and you start slow.
A review pooled 14 trials with 906 people who had IBS. Soluble fiber, like psyllium, cut the number of people who still had symptoms. About 1 in 7 people got relief they would not have had otherwise. Bran, an insoluble fiber, did not help. See Moayyedi et al. (Am J Gastroenterol, 2014).
The catch: adding a lot of fiber all at once can make gas worse for a week or two. Add a few grams at a time. Our guide to flaxseed vs. psyllium compares two common picks.
Fiber is also a good fit if constipation is behind your bloating. More on that below.
Does peppermint oil work for bloating?
It has some of the best data of any natural remedy for gut symptoms.
A review of 12 trials with 835 people found peppermint oil beat a placebo for overall IBS symptoms and belly pain. About 1 in 3 people who took it got relief. Side effects were no more common than with the placebo, 9.3% vs. 6.1%. See Alammar et al. (BMC Complement Altern Med, 2019).
Most trials used capsules coated to open in the gut, not in the stomach. Peppermint tea is a different, weaker thing.
If you have heartburn, ask your doctor before you try it.
Do probiotics help menopause bloating?
Probably not, based on current advice.
In 2023, the American Gastroenterological Association reviewed how to manage bloating. Its advice was blunt: "Probiotics should not be used to treat abdominal bloating and distention." See Moshiree et al. (Gastroenterology, 2023).
That does not mean every probiotic is useless for every gut problem. It means the evidence for bloating is too weak to spend money on.
For the difference between the two, read fiber vs. probiotics.
Do digestive enzyme supplements help?
Only the ones matched to a food you have trouble with.
Alpha-galactosidase is the enzyme sold to cut gas from beans. In a small trial, 8 healthy adults ate 420 g of cooked beans. The higher dose cut both gas made in the gut and how bad the wind felt. See Di Stefano et al. (Dig Dis Sci, 2007).
That is a narrow win. It helps with beans and similar foods, not with bloating in general.
The AGA notes that sugar-digesting problems, like lactose trouble, can be checked by cutting the food out or with a breath test. See Moshiree et al. (Gastroenterology, 2023).
Does a walk after meals ease bloating?
It seems to help gas move along.
In a lab study, 8 people with bloating had gas pumped into their gut. At rest, they kept 45% of it. While pedaling a bike gently, they kept only 24%, and their symptoms eased. See Villoria et al. (Am J Gastroenterol, 2006).
It is a tiny study. But a 10-minute walk after dinner costs nothing and has no downside for most people.
What else do gut doctors suggest?
The 2023 AGA update lists a few options beyond pills. See Moshiree et al. (Gastroenterology, 2023).
- Low-FODMAP eating, with help. A diet that cuts certain fermentable carbs, ideally guided by a gut dietitian.
- Ease constipation first. If you are backed up, easing constipation can ease the bloat. See how to relieve perimenopause constipation.
- Breathing and brain-gut therapy. Belly breathing, hypnotherapy, and CBT are all on the list.
Food swaps help too. Start with foods to avoid when bloated.
When is bloating after menopause a warning sign?
Most bloating is harmless. But some is not, and age matters here.
The National Cancer Institute lists gas, bloating, belly swelling, and feeling full fast as possible signs of ovarian cancer. It advises seeing a doctor if these get worse or do not go away. See the NCI ovarian cancer page.
See your doctor if bloating:
- Is new and lasts most days for 2 to 3 weeks.
- Comes with weight loss, blood in your stool, or vomiting.
- Makes you feel full after a few bites.
- Keeps getting worse.

Where Seya fits, honestly
Seya makes a soluble fiber gummy. It supports regularity and digestive comfort. It is not made to stop bloating, and no supplement can promise that.
If you try fiber, go slow and give it a few weeks. You can see what is in a fiber gummy, and compare options in the best perimenopause supplements.

Frequently asked questions
Which dietary supplements help with menopause bloating?
The best-backed options are soluble fiber, such as psyllium, and coated peppermint oil capsules. Both did better than placebo in reviews of IBS trials. No trial has tested them in menopause alone.
Which probiotics work best for menopause bloating?
None has strong support. In 2023, the American Gastroenterological Association advised that probiotics should not be used to treat bloating and belly swelling.
Do digestive enzyme supplements actually aid digestion?
Only for specific foods. Alpha-galactosidase cut gas after a large bean meal in a small trial. It does not help bloating from other causes.
Does light exercise after meals ease gut symptoms?
It may. In a small study of people with bloating, gentle pedaling cut the gas kept in the gut from 45% to 24%, and symptoms eased.
How can you relieve a bloated stomach quickly?
Take a short, easy walk, loosen tight clothes, and try slow belly breathing. Peppermint oil capsules may help over days to weeks, not minutes.
Are supplements for bloating safe to take long term?
Soluble fiber and peppermint oil had few side effects in trials. Peppermint oil side effects were 9.3% vs. 6.1% on placebo. Ask your doctor first, especially if you take other medicines or have heartburn.
When should bloating after menopause be checked by a doctor?
See a doctor if bloating is new and lasts most days, keeps getting worse, or comes with weight loss, blood in your stool, or feeling full fast.
